A Winning Formula

By Sherri Collins

Editor, Pet Product News International

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What’s the last thing you won? A chamber of commerce award? Local 5k run? Civic-leader certificate? Most improved (fill in sport here) player?

Whatever it was, I’ll bet it made you feel great and brightened your day—if not your week. Winning, at least for me, reinforces self worth. It lets you and others know you’re good at something—damn good. It doesn’t matter if it’s personal or business-related; acknowledgement of excellence is a very “rewarding” experience.

This is why every one of you out there—if you haven’t already—should enter your shop in our Retailer of the Year contest. Every year, Pet Product News International’s editorial team sends out the call for applications. It’s our way of honoring your efforts by letting your peers know of the exceptional work you do, day in and day out. The applications began trickling in last month and new ones are arriving every week. Have you sent in yours yet?

What we are seeking are pet retail establishments that go beyond the brick-and-mortar basics; we want to call attention to retailers who offer more than just pets and supplies, but are actively engaged in the industry and their communities. In short, those who view their pet-retail work as a vocation, not just as a meal ticket, which, I believe, means all of you out there.

Specifically, we are looking for retailers who stand out from the crowd. Things that will differentiate you from the rest of the pack include:

  • A high level of employee training
  • Active involvement with humane, professional and/or service groups
  • Community involvement and outreach
  • Innovative and unique promotions
  • Successful marketing techniques
  • Community, peer or industry honors and/or awards

The deadline to apply is June 12. Click here to download the application. Time is of the essence for this year’s awards, so don’t miss this opportunity to let us--and the pet industry--know what it is that makes you and your store a winner. I’m sure you’ll find it a rewarding experience.
