Crime in the Retail Store

By Carol Boker

Editor in Chief of Pet Product News International and Pet Style News

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Organized retail crime has become a huge problem in our society. In our September issue we cover the bill that was introduced to Congress in mid-July to make retail crime a federal offense. According to the sponsors, organized retail crime currently costs American businesses and consumers $30 billion and federal and state tax collectors $1.6 billion annually—figures that are growing. Pet Product News International will keep our readers updated about the status of this bill, and we plan to provide a pertinent article in an upcoming fall issue.

Over the years, I have talked to retailers who have gone to extreme measures to prevent theft of pets and products in their stores. Some of it comes from employees; some comes from customers, either working alone or with partners.

I would love to hear from any of you who have experienced problems, and what actions you have taken to lessen or eliminate this problem. Write to PPNeditor@bowtieinc.com
