In our November issue, David Alderton, our U.K. freelance writer, discussed a BBC broadcast that shook up The Kennel Club, regarding allegations concerning Crufts standards. Claims abound that dogs on the show suffer from genetic diseases after years of inbreeding.
Whatever happened to cause this uproar, whether it was the broadcast or a stream of other things, some big players, Mars (Pedigree) and Hills, decided to pull their sponsorships of the show.
The Kennel Club insists they will have their show in March despite these setbacks. Britain's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals also decided not to have its usual booth at the show as an attempt to call attention to the high rate of inherited genetic disease among pedigree dogs.
Dogs Trust also pulled from the Crufts show and the Westminster show in New York. Will all this negative publicity mean future problems for Westminster or are the two unconnected?
