Going Green

By Carol Boker

Editor in Chief of Pet Product News International and Pet Style News

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve been pleased to hear from the companies—both manufacturers and retailers—that are doing what they can to be more environmentally friendly.

I just got this e-mail today from Natural Source Printing, a carbon-neutral source for printing, packaging and marketing. They have introduced a FiberStone Paper, tree-free, low-carbon footprint papers made from limestone. The company claims these papers are good for cartons, POP displays, product labels and so forth. The neat thing about it is that the papers use no water, no trees, no chemicals and little energy to produce. You can check out the company at www.naturalsourceprinting.com.

With the movement to greener products and packaging, I need to make sure my staff understands what “green” means for our readers, plus retailers need to educate themselves and be prepared to bring that expertise to their customers.

My husband (a local Firefighter) and I have started Walk The Dog Pet Products where we manufacture and sell 100% BIODEGRADABLE, FLUSHABLE, dog waste bags. Made from a water soluble, polyvinyl (PVA) alcohol film that completely breaks down into carbon dioxide and water when flushed. Our bags pose no environmental impact because they are not made out of plastic.
We are currently in a few local stores with the hopes of expansion.
This is the new and better way to deal with a stinky problem that every dog owner faces. With nearly 50 million pets in the U.S., pet waste disposal has become a growing problem. The current biodegradable bags offered in the market were good; but there has come the need for re-evaluation to our current waste disposal methods. We believe we have the solution.
Although we are by no means experts in the "going green" field, we are learning as much as we can on the topic and are trying consistently to incorporate eco-friendly practices daily within our business.
Thanks for you time,
Maria Kusar
