My good friend, Marilyn Iturri, editor of our sister publication Veterinary Practice News, and I were discussing the interesting ad recently from K-Mart regarding its layaway program. I always remember my Mother using a layaway program at Sears for Christmas gifts for my younger sisters. She would start it in the fall so she could pay for the gifts in time for Santa’s delivery.

I don’t know how many retail outlets still offer such a service, but it might be something pet retailers want to try, especially in light of the tight economy. It might work especially well for big purchases, such as aquarium setups, birdcages, carriers, and dog or cat strollers. Although the timing might be a little late to begin the service this year, consideration for next year is worthwhile, even if the economy comes out of its slump. Sometimes recycled old ideas work for new circumstances.
