A Toast to the Dads of the World

By Julie Jacobs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Father’s Day already, where has this year gone? It is flying by way too fast. Time to plan for a fun day with dad: a hot lazy day around the pool, BBQs, boating or a day in the park full of all sorts of sports and fun are some ways to spend that special day with dad. And of course our four-legged buddies love to join us.

There are so many safety-oriented products for spending a day on or near water with pets. With the warm, soon-to-be-hot weather upon us, it’s time to start thinking of water sports. If your store is in a boating or ocean town, why not set up a nautical shop for pups in your store. Not in a marina environment or have an online store? There is no reason why you, too, cannot set up a water-sports area. But remember, safety first is essential when near the water. Not all dogs are swimmers, and those that are sometimes don’t know their limits and can tire easily. Out on the high seas, you never know when a wave will surprise you; it could knock both people and dogs off balance. Be an advocate for pet safety for all of the numerous water activities your customers participate in.

There are all sorts of dog life preservers, from basic gear to the super fashion-oriented (pink, frilled and even some bling for the fashionistas) to those with all the safety bells and whistles for the serious captain pup. Offering an assortment of both is a sure to attract more potential buyers. Safety ramps for getting out of a pool or a lake are a great item to offer, too. So many dogs love to swim, but get tired and cannot get up over the pool ledge or make that jump up to the boat ramp or dock. By providing such a simple thing as a ramp can save many four-legged lives.

Other great items for your nautical shop include towels and little doggy terry robes to wrap them in to dry off. Rafts and water toys also are great feature items. And don’t forget the fun things for your shop. All sorts of toys have a nautical feel. There are so many rope toys to choose from, along with all the fun squeaky toys, such as  sea critters, round life preservers, anchors and boats. Have a few fashion divas shopping? Then don’t forget the cute little nautical and sailor tees for dress-up time—maybe even a sailor’s cap to top it off.

And as it is Father’s Day, don’t forget to stock some dad-like toys. Squeaky newspapers are always a hit this time of year. For your customers who prefer plush toys, now is the time to do shoes, slippers, tools and other dad-like things. Have a kitty section? Catnip cigars are just the purr-fect thing. And, of course, don’t forget to offer all sorts of balls, not to mention Frisbees, which are perfect for a day in the park playing catch with dad. As always, if you need to reach me, feel free to email me. Cheers to all the dads of the world.
