Global Pet Expo 2012

By Julie Jacobs

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As are many of you, my feet are now recovering from three days of non-stop walking the expansive Global Pet Expo in sunny, warm Orlando. What a great event. Fabulous new products showcased throughout the exhibit alongside some of our old time favorites. In an interview by CNTV (ConventionNewsTV.com), Andy Darmohraj, senior vice president of APPA stated this was the greatest show ever with more than 900 exhibitors, 2500-plus booths and more buyers attending in the 58 years the associationhas been putting on trade shows. See his full interview on Global Pet ExpoTV. You can also watch a wide range of videos and slideshows taken by Pet Product News.

There were several special events during the expo. Wednesday evening Bowtie, parent company to Pet Product News International, hosted its annual networking event after the show. A good time was had by all and we were able to continue our own little happy hour through the evening thanks to our wine tumblers gifts which each received at the end of the evening.

Thursday was a busy day of events. In the morning there was the annual breakfast featuring the first-ever Global Pet Expo Retailer Excellence Awards. The Retailer Excellence Awards are designed to honor outstanding independent pet stores in a variety of categories. Awards were given to one retailer in each of seven different award categories. At the end of the day, there was the presentation for the best new product award from the New Product Showcase area where all the new, innovative items that make you say, “Wow, why didn’t I think of that?!” were featured.

My most favorite event, as it is dear to my heart, was in the evening when Purina and GPE hosted a pool-side event at the Rosen Hotel to honor Jill Rappaport of NBC’s “Today Show,” this year’s recipient of The Excellence in Journalism and Outstanding Contributions to the Pet Industry Award. After years as the entertainment reporter on the “Today Show,” Jill followed her dream thanks to her beloved dog Jack and now dedicates her time to her lifelong love: animals and animal rescue. And what exciting news, as Jill announced the debut of her new neon leash and collar line (soon to be launched on HSN), featuring special sayings on rescue and adoption with proceeds going to rescues and adoption organizations. They look fabulous.

In support of Jill’s passion for saving animals lives, please don’t forget to check out Jill’s “Bow to Wow” segments on NBC’s “Today show.” where she features rescue dogs from the Animal Care and Control in New York City—home to beautiful, sweet, amazing animals all waiting for loving fur-ever homes. From purebreds to mutts, every dog is a winner. I know this first hand as my wonderful Shih tzu, the most loving sweet dog, was rescued from death row 14 years ago at AC&C. Thanks Jill for all you do for the animals of the world! And good luck with your leash & collar line to support our furry rescue friends.

I hope you all had a great show and a great time while in town. Feel free to contact me for additional information. Stay tuned for my next blog featuring info on some great product I found at the show. Until then, happy shopping your new resources.
