Global Pet Expo and Rachel Ray

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My beloved 16 year old Eclectus Parrot Murphy Green and I had the opportunity to attend the Global Pet Expo held in Orlando, Florida March 25-27. Believe it or not, it is my 16th year in a row to either exhibit at or visit Global, and Murphy’s 10th appearance. My mission was to find the latest and greatest products for furry and feathered creatures, make some connections with old friends, and have some good old-fashioned fun.

Murphy and I met Rachel Ray at the show.

The 2010 Expo was bigger then ever! It featured 803 exhibitors, 2,250 booths and more than 3,000 new product launches. There were 4,495 pet product buyers from around the world in attendance. The show is open to independent retailers, distributors, mass-market buyers and other pet industry professionals.

At the event, a special Excellence in Journalism award was presented to Food Network host and animal philanthropist, Rachael Ray. Because of my affiliation with Pet Style News.com, I was able to attend the event and had the opportunity for a photo with Rachael. Murphy was quite star-struck!

I had no idea Rachel was such a devout animal lover and philanthropist. Proceeds from her pet food, Rachel Ray Nutrish, go to her non-profit, Rachael’s Rescue. During her acceptance speech, she tearfully thanked her beloved Pit Bull, Izaboo, for “giving me my heart.” You can watch her complete acceptance speech at www.globalpetexpo.org.
Murphy had a starring role atop Bob Vetere's shoulder during the State of the Industry Address.

The photo-op with Rachel Ray wasn’t Murphy’s only highlight during the Expo. He also sat perched atop APPA President, Bob Vetere’s shoulder as Bob delivered the 2010 State of the Industry Address. Bob delivered a lot of positive news including the fact that the industry grew over five percent last year, one of the few industries that actually realized growth in an otherwise bleak 2009.

I continue to be amazed at the fast growth of the natural/organic product market. When I entered the pet industry in 1987, there was virtually nothing available for people who wanted to ensure their pet wasn’t fed anything artificial or full of chemicals. Now? Wow, the selection was mind-blowing. I can see why this sector or our industry shines so brightly right now.
