Inspiration from Our Pals
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week, just days after Mother’s Day, a dog in New York City showed ferocious love for his own mother on the heavily-traveled Major Deegan Expressway. Husky and Chili, two mixed breed dogs, had escaped from their owner onto the road just before Chili was struck by a car and seriously injured. Unable to stand, Chili lay in the middle of the road while cars sped by on all sides. Husky, who as it turns out is Chili’s son, immediately took action, directing traffic around Chili and even standing over her protectively as animal control officers approached to try to help.
The video is a must-see for any animal lover and can be found here.
Fortunately this story has a happy ending; Chili is recovering from a broken leg and Husky, whom animal control officers could not capture, returned home safely about an hour after the incident.
Maybe I’m a bit sentimental today, but I was so struck by the loyalty and bravery of Husky. I think we sometimes forget what wild, intelligent and capable animals our pets are until we see them handle a crisis situation on their own. It’s impossible to know what was going on in Husky’s mind, but it’s practically undeniable that there is strong loyalty between these two animals.
It is probably this capacity for friendship that brought dogs and humans together in the first place. In some ways, pets reflect our own personalities and human tendencies back to us which—being the naturally vain species we are—is a great pleasure. But once in a while they remind us that in addition to being our buddies, pets can inspire us to be better people. The bravery exhibited by Husky would be remarkable in any creature, even a human.
With sensational news stories about good people being hurt by others, so many of us have become less and less likely to slow down and help a friend or stranger out. But the next time I see someone in trouble, I’m going to think of Husky and do my part.
