No Swine Flu for Pets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With a sometimes deadly flu virus sweeping the globe, it’s nice to know that at least some members of our families appear to have zero risk of contracting it. DogChannel.com reported yesterday that the current virus is spread human-to-human only. Although some forms of the swine flu often affect the pig population, the article says, this current strain is not affecting any species other than humans, including pigs.
Since this topic is on everyone’s minds, now might be a good time to remind your customers to have contingency plans in place for their pets for emergencies or if there is an illness or death. It’s so easy for all of us to go about our days feeling like nothing unfortunate will ever happen to us. But we all love our pets, and the best way to express that love is by planning for their care in case you’re ever unable to provide it yourself.
So take this time to remind your customers to consider their pets in their estate and emergency planning. We can’t all leave our pets with a $12 million trust fund like Leona Helmsley did, but we can speak to friends and family about their care. If, as a boutique owner, you come across someone who does not have close relationships in the local area, you might advise them to make a plan with a nearby no-kill shelter and perhaps make a donation in advance as part of an agreement for the shelter to care for the pet if anything were to happen to the owner.
The key to a good outcome for most things is usually a well considered plan, so your customers may thank you for the reminder this week.
