Smart Business is Always Smart

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the process of editing articles for our upcoming January, 2010 issue, I have found myself reworking a lot of phrases like these: in this economy; since the economic downturn; in the recession etc. etc. etc ad nauseum. I think it’s time to face the truth, so I’m banishing these phrases (except where absolutely necessary) in my own writing and in my editing.

So what is this truth I’m referring to? It’s this: good business is good business no matter what the economy is doing. Is it smart to stock a variety of options at different price points “in this economy” or is that always good business? I think the latter. If our industry gets to mired down in feeling sorry over the state of the economy, we’ll never really move on and make the most of now, which is the moment when everyone should be figuring out how to make money, not dreaming of the days when it was easier and making bad decisions didn’t hurt us as much.

So let’s move forward, everybody, and make good, careful decisions because it’s smart, not because outside factors force us to do so now, but we might not have to later.
