Wendy Bedwell-Wilson, one of our writers, sent this July 1 note from Jan Woo, owner of Barkaroo Bakery in Kapaa, Hawaii, who has relatives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa:
I just got off the phone with the Department of Agriculture, Iowa. The director called trying to locate Laura [Laura, Jan’s cousin, used to do baking for Barkaroo.] - as he had misplaced her phone number, etc. The Department is doing a search on flood damage of all businesses connected with animals in the state of Iowa and Barkaroo popped up on their computer. He wanted to know if Laura was okay. They wanted to know her damage as the government would pay for any expenses she might have. Impressive!!!! to say the least.
Anyway, this department handles all the lost dogs and cats -- as the Humane Society of CR was totally flooded out. They hope to get all the dogs and cats back to their owners and others adopted by July 14th. They are keeping them at the Kirkland High School gym -- the
equestrian center is full of horses as well.
We have sent 500 packs of treats for the animals -- and I will send more this week. As the National Humane Society of the US is one of our clients I have been working with them.
It will be about a year before any of the downtown will be dry enough to start reconstruction he said. Also all of the grain mills down by the river are completely washed out and will not start up again.
I am very impressed with Iowa.
~ Jan
