From life jackets and booties to float coats and surfboards, pet stores can benefit from stocking water safety items.
Manufacturers such as Paws Aboard, Ruff Wear, EzyDog and Dog’s Nite Out offer float coats and life jackets for sailing, swimming and surfing.
“Life vests are our top sellers,” said Brady McClintick, operations manager for Sandpoint, Idaho-based EzyDog.
At Outer Barks in Duck, N.C., owner Kevin Carey said he carries the Ruff Wear float coat “because it extends the time the dog can be in the water.” Outer Barks, near the sand dunes of North Carolina’s Outer Banks, also sells canine footwear to prevent injuries from burrs or cacti in the sand, along with first aid kits and tick removers for Atlantic Ocean adventurers.
Ruff Wear’s float coats can also be found at Sebastian’s Healthy Pet Food & Supply, which has stores in Salem and Sunriver, Ore. Sebastian’s carries Kyjen’s Outward Hound life jacket, too, which has a handle to help lift the dog out of the water, said owner Ellie Tronolone.
Paws Aboard life jackets are a standard item at Lulu & Luigi, which has three stores in Minnesota, because they’re “well-made, come in cute patterns and have helpful sizing charts for customers,” according to owner Laura Bednarczyk. She’s also a big fan of Pawz’ dog boot, a natural rubber, waterproof boot that is reusable and biodegradable, according to Bednarczyk.
In California, where dog surfing is gaining popularity, Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego sponsors an annual Surf Dog competition in which dogs ride customized surfboards from local manufacturer and online retailer Dog’s Nite Out. The company also features a life vest in designer patterns, Dog’s Nite Out owner Michael Drentea said.
