Primal Health, a Minneapolis-based biotech startup focused on eliminating dental disease and all the problems associated with it, earned first place for its at-home pet dental hygiene product line, TEEF!, at the 2020 Veterinary Innovation Summit Pitch Competition. The competition was hosted by Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences and was sponsored by Nationwide Pet Insurance, Purina ProPlan Veterinary Diets and the Pet Care Innovation Prize.
In lieu of this year’s in-person event being canceled due to COVID-19, the VIS Pitch Competition took place virtually for the first time in history. More than 35 different pet care startups submitted their video pitches, with finalists and winners selected by a panel of industry experts comprised of pet care entrepreneurs and veterinarians from SkyPaws, Nationwide, Purina and Kinship.
The top three 2020 prizewinners are:
1st place: TEEF! by Primal Health, $5,000
2nd place: ROO, $3,000
3rd place: KwikVet, $1,000
TEEF!, Primal Health’s companion animal dental health product line, was launched in May 2019 with its first patented prebiotic formula, Protektin42, which is specifically optimized to improve the canine dental microbiome. The ultimate goal is to help dogs keep all 42 teeth during their lifetime by targeting dental disease where it starts, below the gumline, said company officials. This win encapsulates more than 10 years of scientific and clinical studies (in humans and pets) showing that prebiotics can provide a safer and impactful approach to dental health, officials said.
TEEF’s Protektin42 is currently offered in powder form as a drinking water additive (or can be used on a toothbrush), for daily use. The company plans to expand its product line into feline in 2021.
