Chewy has matched Amazon’s prices on pet food and supplies for the third consecutive year, according to a new study by Profitero, a global e-commerce analytics firm. The report, Price Wars, revealed that the two online retailers tie for lowest price in the pet category. However, Walmart is edging closer to the two online retailers’ prices, the report found.

The study analyzed online prices on 15,530 items in 15 categories at Amazon, Best Buy, Chewy, CVS, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Staples, Target, The Home Depot, Walgreens, Walmart and Wayfair. The prices were collected from July 12 to Oct. 3.

In the pet category, the average price difference of Chewy and Amazon versus other retailers was 5 percent, according to the report. Compared to Amazon’s prices, Walmart is “competing aggressively” with Amazon and is 3 percent more expensive, while Home Depot and Target are “keeping things close,” at 8 percent and 12 percent more expensive than Amazon, respectively.

“What’s impressive is that Chewy is able to offer these everyday low prices while investing a lot in customer service and unique personal touches—such as hand-written notes for pet parents,” Profitero officials wrote. “Its ‘Autoship’ program rivals that of Amazon’s Subscribe & Save. Chewy also features an online pharmacy and Connect with a Vet service, truly making it a one-stop shop for all pet needs.”
